It said that the average person thinks over 60,000 thoughts in a day. Imagine -
that's a big number of the amount of thoughts that we're thinking. In Buddhism
they call it the monkey mind, that internal chatter - and I often have people
say to me I can't meditate, I think too much. There are so many mind, body and
spiritual benefits to meditation, but often times it can be a tough practice
because we do have busy minds. With 60,000 thoughts in a day it can be tough
to quiet that mind, and when we sit down to meditate, all of a sudden we're
thinking about the kids, we're thinking about our to-do list, we're thinking about
renovations - all of that mental activity starts. So to be able to not necessarily
stop the thinking. One of the keys of meditation is becoming aware that you
are thinking thoughts - and that might sound a little bit funny but most people
aren't even aware of the thoughts they're thinking. And so if you sit down,
if it's for 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes - the time doesn't matter but the
first step is to commit to a time. So set your timer if it's 2 minutes, and find
that peace, find that quiet, find that stillness, and if you can focus in on a
sound in the room. So if you're quiet right now, do you hear
humming? Maybe a heating unit, an air-conditioning unit, maybe a fan going
on - what's the background noise - and put your attention on that noise. Put your
attention maybe on your breath. And as you're putting your focus on your
attention, on that specific area, and a thought wants to come in just noticing
the thought - it's not good, it's not bad, but you're becoming aware of the
thoughts you're thinking. So if it's more of a curiosity. And as you're noticing
the thought, not judging it, just noticing it and then bringing your attention back
to the sound, to your breath. And oftentimes we're gonna do that many many
times inside of a 2 minute, 5 minute, 10 minute, 15 minute practice. Again it's
not about getting it perfect, but becoming more aware of the thoughts that
you're thinking. And the weight that will serve you in your day as you're moving
towards your goal, your vision, and you get sidetracked, distractions come up, you
want to get frustrated or angry or upset, or get busy doing other tasks - you have a
tool now to bring your attention back to the task at hand. So in a meditation
practice, it's a great opportunity to start to become aware of some of those
60,000 thoughts that you're thinking in a day and redirect that energy. And what
you'll find is the more that you sit in stillness, in quiet, the easier it becomes
to drop into that quiet space where you will receive the health benefits, the
benefits for your mind, your body, and your soul. So make a commitment to
experiment with it, to practice with it, find something to put your attention on -
if it's a noise, if it's your breath, and as you've noticed the thoughts coming in,
notice them and put your attention back on the breath, the noise in the room. And
see what happens - experiment with it! If you would like more tools on Mastering Your
