My dream is to eventually become a chief human resource officer. To be an
aerospace engineer from one of the aircraft's companies. My dream is to one day
become a neurosurgeon. My dream is physical therapy. There's eleven thousand
first-generation college students on the New Brunswick campus. These students have
dreams and goals just like any other college student and we want to make sure
that these first-generation college students get the same type of support
that every other student is receiving from Rutgers-New Brunswick. It's not easy
to be the first person in my family to go to college because I have to set an
example for my siblings. You don't know the resources and you don't have, like,
help from other people in your family or, like, friends.
There's so much expectations and I have no guidance in terms of what to expect.
The RU-1st initiative's goal is to support first-generation students. Being
the first to do anything is often challenging, certainly navigating the
college campus, and being the first one in your family
that, is just as difficult. The RU-1st initiative serves as that type of guide,
to serve as a level of support and really provide opportunities so that
students can be successful. We're hosting our first ever golf clinic, not only can it
introduce students to the game of golf but to help them understand the advantages
that the game provides in terms of networking contacts. At Undergraduate
Academic Affairs we're always looking for different ways to involve mentors
and I don't think you would get to know a mentor any better than playing
two to four hours, 9 to 18 holes on a golf course. It's a great way to network
and you never know who you're going to meet and how that's going to impact your
career.
