songs but you find that the process is messy and confusing and it's hard to keep track
of everything!
This is quite normal, I am Giorgio from DIY Recording hacks and in this video I will share
with you the 7 steps to transform your ideas into radio worthy songs!
There are 7 steps you need to take in order to transform an idea into a radio worthy song,
each step has its to do list.
Before I start when you are following each of the steps try to get as finished sounds
as possible don't leave anything for the later stages of the production this will make
your life way easier, so let's dive in the steps.
Step one is songwriting, here is where you start writing your songs, find a some catchy
chord progression and a catchy melody, record them in your DAW and star structuring your
song, meaning find a chord progression for the verse, one more for the chorus and so
on till you covered each section of the song and then you can copy and paste to decide
in which order your sections will play at.
Consider this as the foundation of a great radio worthy song!
Step two is Arranging, inn this step you will start structuring the arrangement of your
song, which sounds are you going for?
What kind of instruments does your song need?
What kind of mood are you going for?
In this step you will take care of all of this, here is where your session will start
filling up with sounds, for this step don't worry about getting super tight performances
and finished sounds because we will worry about that in the next step, this step serves
you only as a preview, don't be afraid to program virtual instruments and use copy and
pasting to fill up your session.
Now let's get into step three which is recording, in this step you will start recording all
of your final sounds if you are using virtual instruments or you are recording acoustic
instruments just make sure to capture the sounds as you want to hear them on the record
and try to get the best performances you can get don't leave anything for fixing later.
I give you a great hack if you are overdubbing meaning you are recording one instrument at
the time: try to record longer takes because in this way the end result will sound more
natural.
Now it's time for step four which is editing, here you will start giving to your performances
a first polish, when I edit my tracks usually the first thing I do is to cleanup unwanted
noise, imagine having 60 tracks with all the unwanted noise like coughs on vocals, noise
etc. etc. that will add up in no time so this is the time to get rid of what you don't
need.
You might want to also tighten up the timing, but I assume that you recorded pretty tight
takes so you won't need to drastically fix timing issues but just tighten everything
a little bit, a few cuts and nudges will really go a long way for the overall feel of the
song.
Remember to edit use your ears and not your eyes because if you are looking for stuff
to edit you will never finish the job!
When I edit I will also go trough the tuning to see if there is anything that needs to
be tightened up or not.
I have a question for you now:"What would you like to know more about music production?"
Let me know in the comments.
Now I want to help you further, in the description I have a link where you can download my home-studio
production checklist for free, this is a checklist where I cover all of these steps that I am
explaining you in this two part video series so that you can refer to it whenever you are
producing a new song not to get lost in the process!
