When you should be using an EQ and my 3 steps thought process whenever I want to EQ a track.
I am Giorgio from DIY Recording hacks, let's get started.
So the first question is:"When should you be using an EQ?"
The answer is that there are no set rules for when you need to EQ a track but I have
guidelines and a few problems that an EQ can help you solve.
The first problem, if you head any frequency build up or nasty frequency in your sound
source.
This is a very good sign to pull up an EQ and fix the problem.
Second, if you feel that a sound source can be enhanced by boosting some frequencies to
make it sound better is another case where an EQ might be the right choice.
The third scenario is that let's say you have two instruments sitting in the same frequency
range but you cannot hear clearly either of them and don't matter how many volume adjustment
you make, this two tracks won't sit clearly together, this is another sign you could use
an EQ to give space for one another to coexist in the same frequency range.
Certain effects can be achieved with EQ as well, the famous telephone effect is an example.
Now let's dive in my 3 steps EQ thought process: The first step is always to correct, this
brings you two benefits, the first one is that you will be gaining headroom and the
second one is that by cutting nasty frequencies in a sound source you will reveal what's is
already good in that sound source.
The second step in my EQ thought process is to enhance meaning if there are any frequencies
that I want to hear more in a sound I will just boost them, making the sound source sounding
more like the target sound I am going for.
The third step in my EQ process is to refine this step consists in making sure that every
instrument sits in the mix clearly in its frequency range meaning if you have two guitars
sitting in the same frequency range, I would like to cut a certain frequency from one and
boost the same frequencies on the other guitar so that you can hear them both clearly and
they will sit toghether without clashing with each other in the frequency spectrum.
A very important hack that I found trough the years is to always level match the input
and output of an EQ because when you are adjusting the frequency balances you will also alter
the volume of the track, and if the input and output are not level matched the comparison
of the before and after won't be fair because we tend to prefer louder sounds rather than
softer sounds.
The last thing I want is to fool my ears into prefering some EQ moves that actually are
not bringing any improvement to a sound.
A have a question for you now:"How does the process of making music in your own bedroom
look like?"
Let me know in the comments below.
Now I want to help you further I have in the description a link where you can download
my free EQ checklist.
This checklist will guide you in the thought process of pulling up an EQ so you can refer
to it whenever you feel the need of equing a track.
