AN UPSTATE NEW YORK MAN ON THE
TRIP OF A LIFETIME...FOLLOWING
HIS GRANDFATHER'S WORLD WAR II
PRISON TIME DIARY LEADING HIM TO
FIND PRICELESS ARTIFACTS.
INCLUDING PARTS OF THE BOMBER
PLANE HIS GRANDFATHER WAS IN
BEFORE IT WAS SHOT DOWN BY
GERMANS.
LOUIS FINLEY FROM OUR SISTER
STATION IN ALBANY HAS THAT STORY
FOR US THIS MORNING.
NAT - "Stone walls do not a
prison make nor iron bars a
cage." It's a journey spanning
multiple countries and several
years.
Iain Walker of Niskayuna heard
countless tales of his
grandfather's time as a POW in
World War II.
It's through reading them after
his death that led Walker on a
mission to retrace the former
POWs' footsteps.
"One thing that he passed down
to me was his wartime diary and
I heard it was really
impressive, but it really is
quite amazing." Sergant Denis
Airforce.
Of
the seven on board . LLyod . the
only one to survive.
"Why did he survive? And it's
kind of like one of those
typical existential questions.
Why am I here?" Those questions
leading Walker to Britain and
Germany . creating a detailed
log of his grandfather's travels
following the escape from the
plummeting plane.
"Seeing the barn where he hid
overnight in a hay loft before
being captured and going to the
farm where his comrades died was
an emotional experience."
Not only do those places still
exist nearly 80 years later .
but something else still remains
in these fields.
"These pieces here would be the
fuselage of the plane where you
can see the riveting." The land
owners allowing Walker to post
this memorial plaque on their
home.
"It's a surreal moment.
It's something that I'll never
forget." "I wish I had five more
minutes to talk to him.
I have 1000 questions."
